Song du Jour

Every day has a soundtrack.  I believe there is something very subconscious about my brain choosing a song or an entire menu of songs on which to perseverate each day.  To share the broken record nightmare, I'm writing them down here because crazy loves company.  You're welcome.

April 25
To Whom it May Concern by The Civil Wars.  New band to me.  Dude looks like Jack Sparrow.
Pretty Girl looks like my brother's girlfriend.  Love their sound.  Must learn how to pick a geha-tar just to play this song.

February 3
In the Gloaming by Jonatha Brooke

I have been back on the Jonatha Brooke train.  I discovered her in the 90s when she was with The Story.  Since then I sing her songs in the shower, in the car, in my sleep.  She has never left my side all these years in my mind so I decided to look her up to find out if she's still performing out there in the real world.  She is.  She's married, lives in NYC and has lots going on with her music lately.  Couldn't be more excited to be "reunited" with an old songbird who inspires me to dust off my chops again.  Love love love Jonatha Brooke.

October 5
Hugh Laurie haz the blues, without the British accent.  It's the reverse Madonna.  Love it.  Love it so much, it's on repeat in my boudoir.  I don't have a boudoir but if I did....

Sept. 2
Not Over You by Gavin DeGraw

August 10
Like a Star by the so so lovely Corinne Bailey Rae
How adorable is she?  Her voice is like one glass of white wine for me.  Calming, mellowing.  I'll take two, please.

August 1
Sway by the beautiful Bic Runga
I found her a few years ago, way before children, marriage, grad school.  She was one of those artists I listened to in the earphones at a record store.  I felt like I had discovered my generation's Joni Mitchell.  This girl's voice is pure, her lyrics gold, and her face - angelic.  I wonder where she is and if she's still performing now.  I'm off to google her.  I hope she's still around doing her thing. Nobody does it better.
* update:  Yes!  She's still around and living (back) in New Zealand.  Knew there was a reason I love that place.  Here's her Wikipedia link (Bic Runga) if you're interested in talent and beauty being indecipherable from each other.

July 26
Sara Bareilles -  King of Anything  Just kind of addicted to the piano progression and have no idea what the lyrics are which I will have to change post haste because they seem definitely sassy for a Tuesday.

July 10
Liar Liar by Christina Grimmie who I realize is young enough to be my daughter. She writes, she sings, she plays. What's not to adore? The hair is what mine aspires to be when it grows up and the voice rivals Xtina in my humble opinion.

July 6 Colder Weather by Zac Brown Band (again) strictly because I cannot get the lyric, "you're a ramblin' man, you ain't ever gonna change, you got a gypsy soul to blame and you were born for leaving'," out of my veins.

July 1
Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri.  Great line:  "And who do you think you are, running around leaving scars?"

June 25
Ten Million Fireflies by Owl City because it is a week of the flying lanterns. Press me to hear me glow.

June 13
Rolling in the Deep by Adele  with its foot stomping bass line.  awwwyeaaaaaaah.

June 2
Free by Zac Brown Band
I'm feeling free too Mister Zac.  Free as we'll ever be with my two kids and your knit cap.  Sing it.

May 18
Slide by Goo Goo Dolls but sung here by this dude, Jimmy Mancus.  Nicely done, Jimmy.  Diggin the breathy vocals, my friend.

March 31  Summertime by the one and the only Ella Fitzgerald.  All other songstresses need not apply.  And Louis Armstrong adds that extra layer of throaty sadness that makes Ella's voice float like a dandelion in June. Holy crap I cannot WAIT for June.

March 25  Tubthumping by Chumbawamba and yes, that was proper English.  Scram, unwellness.  I got it from here thank you very much.

March 7   Hard Headed Woman by the only Cat Stevens.  Sing it, Yusuf.

Feb 27  Rehab by Amy Winehouse.  Word.

Late Feb.  Send Me on My Way by Rusted Root.  Just try not to think of summer.

Feb 9   Kings of Leon's Use Somebody covered by PixieLott.

Feb 3  Crosby Stills & Nash because my dad just left.  I have no idea if he even likes this band but it makes me think of him anyway because it was playing somewhere in the house while he was visiting.

Jan 17 2011  In the Journey by the man who has music running through every vein in his body, Martin Sexton.  It doesn't get better than Martin.  Google him.  Listen to his tracks.  He allows videotaping in his concerts so most of what you'll see is "bootleg" versions instead of commercial.  Lends to the organic nature with which he performs.  To see him live is to go to church.  Whatever church you believe in.  I believe in The Church of Marty :)

Jan 02 2011 yo!  Feeling cozy, Colby Caillat style

Dec 15  Firework by Katy Perry.   The hook is ridiculous and heavenly.

Dec 4   Joy to the World by Jewel  Let heaven and nature sing.

Nov 17  Feeling Nostalgic for some particular reason today.

Nov 4 - Falling Slowly  by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova.  I want to be Marketa for a day.

October 20 - I Think We're Alone Now.  Talk about an inability to think outside the box.  Sheesh, subconscious, you're letting me down

October 4 - Airplanes featuring Hayley Williams from Paramore.  Love this hook and although not a huge rap fan, I do love me some B.o.B.

September 27 - Please Don't Leave Me by Pink I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN YELL ANY LOUDER.

Sept. 25 - While My Guitar Gently Weeps by the Beatles played by crazy talented Santana and sung here by the untouchable voice of India.Arie  There aren't many celebrities I want to meet but she is one of my top 3.  Sarah Mac and Jewel being the other two, of course.

September something - it's Wednesday if that helps.  Sheryl Crow's Run Baby Run while doing the dishes.  Literally?  The kids were running like track stars around the kitchen and into the living room.  Figuratively?  Not going there.

Sept 15 - Paul Revere by Beastie Boys  I think I'm going crazy.

Sept 14 - Back at One by Brian McKnight.  Abby's learning her numbers and I happen to think Brian's voice is a tad bit better than my own. : )

September 9-  Prince's When Doves Cry. Dig if you will the picture....Boom chaka boom, boom, boom boom boom.

September 2- Welcome to the Machine by Pink Floyd without all the war inferences.

September 1 - Heart's Alone (sung here with Carrie Underwood b/c why not?)  I think I miss my husband.

August 19 - I Saw the Sign by Ace of Base.  Fortuitous or just a flashback?

August 18 - Quiet in here today.  Sleeping beasties.

August 16 - What do you want from me?  by Adam Lambert   uh oh.  it's only monday.

July 30 - One by Metallica in honor of my brother Eric's birthday today.  He may not even like this song anymore but I remember every note to the intro as he played it over and over and over again for a year or two (or ten!) when we lived under the same roof.  I actually thought he wrote this song before I saw the video years later.
 Happy BDay to my brother.

July 29 - Duffy's Mercy.  Hello August.  You are one step closer to September and one step nearer to preschool.  Mercy.

July 27 - Just a Little Crush Glee style.  Heard it on a TV promo and am "sha-la-la-la'" ing all day long.

July ?? (Monday) -  Glory Bound by Martin Sexton.  Feeling soft, safe, and groovy.  This song means for me, back on track.

July 22-  Holiday by Madonna   Can you guess who just got their NEW AC UNIT put into the house today?!?!?!?  "Oooh yeah, oooh yeah c'mon, let's celebrate!"

July 21-  Can't get the lyric, "I really love your peaches, want to shake your treeeeeee." out of my cerebellum.  Maybe I need fiber?

July 20-  Put Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae   because I'm shopping for an old record player.

July 19 -Not much running through my brain today.  Quiet in there.  In restoration from a busy weekend spent.  But yesterday?  Oh my goodness, this one ALL DAY LONG.  I could not shut Beyonce up.  But who would want to with a voice like hers?

Halo by Beyonce. (*By the way, a little fun fact is that I went to H.S. (so did CRK) with the beautiful man in this video.  His name is Michael Brown but goes by Michael Ely for Hollywood.  My five degrees of separation from Beyonce.  We're practically sisters.)

July 16-  I Wanna Be Sedated by The Ramones because I have a dentist appointment in about 45 minutes.

July 15- A medley of Peter, Paul & Mary's Leaving on a Jet Plane (sung by Chantal Kreviazuk),
Everybody Knows by Leonard Cohen, and Ivan Neville's Why Can't I Fall in Love   (the two latter songs both from Pump Up the Volume movie soundtrack - possibly one of the best soundtracks of time.) Reliving the 80s with my stirrup pants and jelly bracelets.  Good Lord I'm getting old.

July 14-  Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden is the soundtrack of the day.  Two reasons:  Andy Cohen from BRAVO & today's drizzly rainy slippers & soup weather.

July 13 - Don't know the name of the song but the chorus goes, "I got the magic in me, I got the magic in me....I got the magic in meeeee."  This song is cheesy, horribly repetitive and on rewind in my brain for 4 hours now.  Apparently today I have the magic in me.  And I can't wait for it to come out.

July 12 - "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles  Spent the morning watching my little girl hold the hand of one of my oldest and dearest friends.  Happy Day.
